Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure aimed at lightening the shade of teeth, removing stains and discoloration, and enhancing their overall appearance. This is achieved through the application of bleaching agents such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide.

Teeth whitening is indicated for:

  1. Extrinsic Stains: Caused by consumption of coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, or foods that stain teeth.
  2. Intrinsic Stains: Resulting from aging, trauma, excessive fluoride (fluorosis), or use of tetracycline antibiotics during tooth development.
  3. Improving Aesthetics: For patients seeking a brighter smile as part of cosmetic dental enhancement.
Although significant shade and color improvement can be achieved by scaling and polishing, some intrinsic stains will require teeth whitening for proper results. At our clinics, we evaluate oral health and identify the cause of discoloration. Professional cleaning removes plaque and tartar for optimal results. Soft tissues are protected using a rubber dam or gel to avoid irritation. Application of Whitening Agent is done by 
  • In-office whitening: A stronger peroxide gel is applied, often activated by light or laser.
  • Take-home kits: Custom-fitted trays with a milder gel for gradual whitening.

The duration of application depends on the method; in-office treatments take about 30–90 minutes. Fluoride treatments may be applied to reduce sensitivity.

Important Considerations

  • Not recommended for pregnant/lactating women or those with severe gum disease.
  • Results vary based on the individual’s oral habits and enamel condition.
  • Temporary sensitivity or gum irritation may occur but typically resolves quickly.
