What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics deals with the correction of misaligned teeth (malocclusions), jaws, and facial structures. Misaligned teeth and improper bites (overbite, underbite, crossbite) are common dental issues that, if left untreated, can lead to difficulties in chewing, speaking, and maintaining oral hygiene. Orthodontists use specialized tools like Braces and Aligners to shift teeth into their proper positions, ensuring improved dental function and aesthetics.
Orthodontics for Adults and Children
During childhood, orthodontics is geared towards guiding of erupting milk teeth and permanent teeth to the correct positions. This ensures the child will have the function and the beauty of teeth when growing up. For kids and young children, it usually starts at the age of 7-8 years when permanent teeth begin to come through. At this phase, certain conditions such as overcrowding or improper bite may be corrected through the use of removable Dentofacial Growth Modification appliances, or early interceptive Orthodontic treatments, thereby avoiding more complex issues in the future. Orthodontics in adolescent as well as adults is usually caused by different factors such as genetic heritability, trauma, gum recession or bruxism. Different treatment options include fixed appliances like Braces (metal brackets that are bonded to teeth) or Clear Aligners (trays that are designed to gradually move the teeth over time). The clear aim is always a better smile through improved biting depth and a confidence increase.
The Treatment Process
- Initial Consultation: The first step is a consultation with Dr Farhan Zaib, who will assess your teeth, gums, and jaw through physical examinations, X-rays, and 3D scans.
- Treatment Plan: Based on the assessment, Dr Farhan Zaib will discuss with the patient a detailed customized treatment plan. This plan outlines the corrective measures that need to be taken and estimates the length of treatment.
- Placement of Braces: Metal brackets are attached to the teeth using a dental adhesive. A wire is passed through the brackets, and small elastic bands secure the wire in place. Instruction regarding hygiene and care for braces are explained in detail.
- Adjustments: Every 4 to 8 weeks, Dr Farhan Zaib will activate the braces to keep the teeth moving in the desired direction. Regular check-ups allow monitoring the progress and make adjustments as needed.
- Removal of Braces: Once the teeth have moved into their correct positions (usually 1 to 3 years later), the braces are removed, and a retainer is fitted to maintain the new alignment.
