Tooth Extractions (Normal and Wisdom Teeth)

Tooth extraction is a dental procedure that involves removing a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. There are several reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted:

  • Severe tooth decay or infection: When a cavity is too large or too deep to be treated with a filling, or if the pulp of the tooth is infected, extraction may be necessary.
  • Trauma: If a tooth is broken by accidental injury or cracked in a way that cannot be repaired with a filling or crown, extraction may be advised.
  • Advanced periodontal disease: In cases of severe gum disease, the supporting bone and tissue around the tooth can be infected, which makes the tooth mobile and requiring extraction.
  • Orthodontic treatment: Sometimes teeth need to be removed to create space for proper tooth alignment during orthodontic treatment.
  • Impacted wisdom teeth: If wisdom teeth are painful or impacted, meaning they are unerupted inside the jawbone or gum tissue, they may need to be extracted.

How Tooth Extraction is Performed?

Tooth extraction is usually done by a dentist or an oral surgeon. The process typically involves the following steps:

  1. Anesthesia: Local anesthesia, such as a numbing gel or injection, is applied to the area to ensure the patient feels minimal pain during the procedure.
  2. Tooth extraction: Advanced tools are used to loosen the tooth from its socket and extract it. In some cases, the dentist may need to cut into the gum tissue to expose the tooth for easier removal. Some force is required to extract the tooth as it is usually a hard structure embedded in strong jawbone.
  3. Stitches: After the tooth is removed, the dentist may sometimes place stitches to help the gums heal and prevent bleeding.

Post Operative Instructions and Care

After the tooth extraction, we provide detailed instructions for post-operative care, which may include:

  • Bleeding: Some bleeding is normal after extraction, and we provide instructions on how to control any bleeding.
  • Pain management: We will prescribe pain medication or recommend over-the-counter pain relievers to help manage any discomfort.
  • Diet: We may recommend a soft diet for the first few days after the extraction to prevent irritation to the extraction site.
  • Oral hygiene: We will provide instructions on how to brush and floss around the extraction site to maintain proper oral hygiene.
  • Follow-up: A follow-up appointment may be scheduled to ensure proper healing and to remove any stitches if necessary. Tooth extraction is a common procedure, but it’s essential to follow the  instructions for pre and post-operative care to ensure a smooth and successful recovery.
