Dental Crowns
Bridges

A dental Crown is a “cap” placed over a damaged tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Dental crowns are restorations that fully cover dental implants or damaged teeth, providing complete protection from trauma and decay. Crowns are cemented onto natural teeth or implants and are not removable by the patient.

A crown protects a weak tooth from breaking or restores a tooth that’s already broken or heavily worn down. They can significantly improve the appearance of your teeth, while also strengthening and protecting a damaged tooth. After an RCT, it covers a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment to protect it.

Crowns also improve the appearance of discolored or chipped teeth. They provide strength when a tooth has significant decay but not enough structure to hold a filling.

A dental bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring a prosthetic tooth (pontic) to adjacent natural teeth or implants. Bridges are used as a replacement of missing teeth, to restore chewing and speaking function. They keep surrounding teeth from drifting into the gap left by a missing tooth.

Bridges restore  the smile aesthetics as they fill gaps in the smile from missing teeth.A well designed bridge restores normal oral function by improving chewing and speaking. Crowns and bridges both matches the natural teeth in color and shape.

Bridges are also durable and long-lasting with proper care. Bridges can last for many years, significantly improving oral health and appearance. Just like crowns, bridges are cemented onto natural teeth or implants and are not removable.

Crown and Bridge Procedure

The process of crowns and bridges is nearly the same. A crown is placed on one single tooth or an implant. The bridge is placed on multiple teeth for support its span depends on the number of missing teeth being replaced.

The tooth is shaped by removing a small portion of enamel to make room for the crown. For bridges, 2 or more adjacent teeth (abutments) are shaped to hold crowns. An impression or digital scan of the prepared tooth is taken and sent to the lab for fabrication. the crown is fabricated as a single tooth while a bridge is created, consisting of crowns for the abutments and a pontic for the missing tooth. After trial and final inspection, the permanent crown or bridge, made from porcelain, metal, or zirconia, is cemented onto the tooth. Proper oral hygiene advice and guidance on avoiding hard foods for a few days is given.
